The columns on the **Absence types** list show each type's unit, whether it **Deducts balance**, whether it **Requires approval**, and its visibility.

For a system type, you can change only the name, privacy and active state. The category, unit and balance impact are fixed.

<Note>
  You record medical leave (L4) in Tivero as an absence. Tivero doesn't accept L4 documents — don't attach documents or medical details to a request.
</Note>

## Add a custom type

Custom types are available on plans that include them. See [Plans and trial](/en/billing/plans-and-trial).

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the form">
    Click **Add type**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Describe the type">
    Enter the **Name** and choose the **Category** (Employee (UoP), B2B or Other) and the **Unit** (Days or Hours).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the behavior">
    Turn **Deducts from balance**, **Requires approval**, **Details visible to everyone** and **Active** on or off.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Click **Add type**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

A new type becomes available to people only when their [absence policy](/en/time-off/absence-policies) covers it.

## Privacy of details

When **Details visible to everyone** is off, the type is private. Only the employee, their manager and HR see the details. Everyone else sees just the word "Absence" in the calendar.

## Turn a type off

Turn off **Active** if the type shouldn't be available in new requests. Existing requests stay unchanged.
